Of Aging and the Universal Flu Vaccine

Two interesting headlines in Calcalist: in five years we’ll get to know our approximated life expectency, and if everything goes alright, we’ll have a universal Flu Vaccine  to boot.

There’ve been two interesting articles in Calcalist (the Israeli Economist), lately. I really recommend reading this paper, as it has some quality articles appearing every few days. The first deals with the aging world, which is a topic that has vast ramifications on the economy, society and healthcare, especially in Europe and the United States. According to Prof. Barzilai, the main interviewee, in five years each of us will be able to know his or her approximated life expectancy – which obviously includes the insurance companies as well. He also claims that soon he’ll find a cure for aging that will ensure a long and healthy life. While I certainly lack the depth of knowledge Prof. Barzilai is in possession of, I find that overly optimistic. There are quite a few aging illnesses: heart attacks, strokes, different kinds of cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and on and on. To have one cure for all of them – and soon, too – seems a bit preposterous to me. But then again, one can always hope for the best.

The second article – more of a laconic press release, really – reveals that BiondVax reported this weekend that phase I/II of the clinical trials of its universal flu vaccine gave up significantly positive results. According to Calcalist, 60 people at ages 18-49 took part in the clinical trial and received the vaccine injections. According to the current statistically significant results, the vaccine is both efficient and safe for use. And while it might be effective against swine flu as well, the development process is not about to end for 3-5 years from now. It’s worth mentioning that BiondVax is a publicly-traded company located in the Weizmann Science Park in Rehovot.
