An online survey reveals that medical device companies embrace social media slowly but surely.
Everyone wants to advertise their wares to as many people as possible. However, it costs a lot to put your ad on TV or even on Ynet. The most simple solution, which more and more companies are beginning to use, is to create their own social media on the net: blogs, groups on Facebook, fan pages – they’re all out there. And if they’re written well enough, they can easily receive thousands of visitors every day, most of whom belong to the target audience desired by the website’s initiators. But just how widespread is this trend? A new online survey, conducted on medical device companies in Minnesota, California and Massachusetts revealed that over half of the firms participated in some form of social media, whether for job-related activities or to engage customers.
“The World Wide Web is the new place where public relations can really happen. The net puts ‘public’ into public relations.” says Nahum Donitza, director at NewPR.co.il and founder and managing director at Donitza PR-DMC. “The way things are right now, if you’re not on the net, you just don’t exist anymore.”
As for myself, I find myself in complete agreement with the results of the survey and with Donitza’s words. An interesting blog or website, especially in english, can attract more viewers than most of the reasonably-priced ads, especially when catering to a very specific audience, as biomed firms tend to do. What’s more, if you own such a firm and have no website (heavens forbid), it’s a major failure. As Donitza said himself – you simply don’t exist. On the other hand, if you have a well organized website that is easy to use, dynamic and interesting to read, you’ll gather an audience with hardly any effort. A good example of such a site would be Yomi, where they are actively building a community to encourage the use of vitamins. While their target audience is mostly mothers and children, the same methods – building a social media network – apply for every firm, whether they deal in biomed or otherwise.
